China Center of Industrial Culture Collection (CICC) is a national commonweal organization professionally engaged in collection and management of industrial microbial resources. It is the member of World Federation for Culture Collections(WFCC) and China Committee for Culture Collection of Microorganism and is affiliated with China National Research Institute of Food and Fermentation Industries. The mission of CICC is to collect, identify, evaluate, preserve, supply and exchange industrial microbial resources and provide training and technique service in presevation and application to community.

CICC currently holds a collection of about 10153 strains and more than 300 thousand copies of various industrial microorganism from 212 genera and 839 species, including 4445 strains of bacteria, 3222 strains of yeast, 2220 strains of mold, 266 strains of large-scale fungi . These strains cover most kinds of microorganism used in food and fermentation industry and many of them have high performances in producing. CICC has extensive contacts and cooperations with other culture collection center from dozens of countries and regions, like Japan, the United States, Britain, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong etc. and provides thousands of industrial strains or tested strains to enterprises and research organizations all over the word every year.

CICC has successively published two editions of Chinese Industrial Strains Catalog and Probiotic Strains Catalogue, and published Chinese strains catalog (the first edition and the second edition)with other internal culture collection center. CICC has also established database and network of industrial microbial resource (www.china-cicc.org). All of those provide a sharing platform of industrial microbial resource to the whole society.

CICC, as an organization professional in industrial microbial preservation in China, has self-contained preservation and management facilities. It covers an area of 800 square metres and consists of the strain preservation library, the main laboratories which are composed of identification laboratory, analysis and evaluation laboratory ,application laboratory and molecular biology laboratory, and the auxiliary laboratories which are composed of sterile room, microscope observation room, strain operating room, instrumental analysis room, strain incubation room, freeze drying room, and strain archive room. The laboratories are equipped with full sets of equipment for preservation, incubation, breeding and analysis.

CICC using advanced identification and analysis techniques establishes multiple identification system ,which composed of traditional phenotypic analysis (including morphological characteristics, physiological and biochemical characteristics, BIOLOG carbon utilization analysis, chemical classification etc.), phylogenetic analysis (including 18S rDNA , 26S rDNA D1/D2 domain phylogenetic analysis, ITS domain phylogenetic analysis etc.) and genotype analysis (including DNA G+ C content determination, DNA-DNA hybridization, isozyme analysis, PFGE, RAPD etc.). Based on the ample experiences in industrial strain identification ,CICC provides good theoretical and technical support for enterprises and research institutes in strain identification and quality control, product export, enterprise certification, contamination analysis and production process control, microorganism analysis of ferment product.

CICC has a high-quality professional work team of 14 people ,including more than 35% senior technicians and more than 79% masters. They are respectively engaged in resource classification and collection, strain identification, criterion and standard establishment, database development and network sharing , as well as microbial resource import and sharing promoting

In the past three decades, CICC worked effectively in scientific management of culture collection, standardization training of operation skills (GLP, Good Laboratory Practice) as well as development and utilization of microbial resources ect. It accumulated a wealth of experiences, and cultivated a large number of high-quality professionals as well as made important contributions to protection, management and development of chinese industrial culture resources .Since 2004, CICC has undertaken National Industrial Microbial Resource Sharing Platform Construction Project. It led 3 departments, 12 universities and research institutes form seven provinces and cities to accomplish the project. The project has played an active role in food biotechnology industry progress and development, and successively awarded China National Light Industry Council Scientific and Technological Progress the first prize in 2007 and the Chinese Institute of Food Science and Technology Innovation Technological Progress the first prize in 2008.

topHistory

China National Reasearch Institute of Food and Fermentation Industries is the earliest scientific research institute professionally engaged in collection and management of industrial microbial resources in China. In 1953, Industrial Culture Collection Group was established based on Shanghai Test Institute and began research in vacuum freeze-drying preservation technology. In 1958, Industrial Culture Collection Group moved to Beijing with Fermentation Industry Research Institute. From then on, It gradually sets up complete management systems and technical methods and acts as a leader in the field of industrial culture collection and management in China.

In 1979, China Center of Industrial Culture Collection(CICC)was formally established, and It set up 8 branch centres in 8 provinces and cities, which constituted a national industrial microbial resource network, and laid the protection and management foundation of industrial microbial resources in China.

CICC has ever conducted a comprehensive investigation and collection of industrial microbial resource in China. It identified and cataloged the resource as well as established industrial microbial resources library and archives, and finally ended the confused situation. It made a significant contribution to protection and utilization of chinese industrial microbial resources. The key scientific research“Industrial Microbial Resources Classification, Identification, Naming and Cataloging Research” presided over by CICC was awarded Ministry of Light Industry Scientific and Technological Progress the second prize in 1987, as well as the branch projects also won Beijing Ershang Bureau Scientific and Technological Achievements the second prize in 1984, Shanghai Food Corporation the Second Prize and Tianjin Scientific and Technological Progress the third prize in 1985.

From 1984 to 1986, CICC undertook the Ministry of Light Industry Technology Development Fund Project “Production Performance Research of Mold and Yeast in Wine and Soy Sauce”. It screened 868 strains of mold and yeast used in producing wine an soy sauce, measured nearly 40 items of production performance according to different useages, obtained about 6000 datas, found out the main parameters of important production performance, and selected hundreds of valuable strains with special characters or useages from them. It is one of CICC’main application researchs. It has important scientific, economic and social significance in development, utilization and scientific management of microbial resources, and providing reliable scientific datas for cooperation and exchange.

From 1990 to 1992, CICC undertook the Technology Development Fund project “Development of Food Industry Microorganisms Database” from Ministry of Light Industry. It developed Chinese first professional management system used in industrial microbial resource, filled the gap in this area and made progress in management and exchange of industrial microbial resources. The database was composed of five branch databases, including industrial microbial resource catalog database, preservation management database, preservation technology database, resource distribution database and administration database. It was complete and reliable to meet scientific and modern management needs.

In the past 50 years, China Center of Industrial Culture was paid high attention by institute. Some leaders in CICC such as Qin Han-zhang, Wang Wei-qing, Mo Xiang-yun, Tang Er-ming were not only leaders in the field, but also experts. As a core organization in the area of industrial microbial resource management in China, CICC trained a large number of high-quality talents and made great contributions to development of Chinese microbiology industry.

Since 2000, CICC accelerated the pace of building national industrial microbial resource organization. It replanned its organization setup、work team、operation range 、production line and development direction, and upgraded the instruments, established molecular identification laboratory, introduced international advanced microbial identification system, improved liquid nitrogen and low temperature preservation facilities. Finally it achieved scientific management and social sharing of industrial microbial resources.

In 2001, CICC established chinese industrial microbial resource network (www.china-cicc.org), and first achieved resources sharing on the net. In 2002, It set up an international industrial microbial resource exchange platform which provided strain introducing service for internal enterprises and research institutes. Now it has already established an efficient introduing channel and a good reputation. In 2004, CICC undertook the project of “Construction of China Industrial Microbial Resource Platform and Sharing Pilot” from Ministry of Science and Technology and was responsible for collection, arrangement of industrial microbial resources and construction of sharing platform. It rebuilded chinese industrial microbial resource sharing network and efficiently promoted social sharing and use of industrial microbial resource.
